Family Ice Hosts Godfrey Wood Cup Hockey Tournament, Raising Over $12,000 for Rink Maintenance
FALMOUTH, ME — September 14, 2026 — Family Ice proudly hosted the annual Godfrey Wood Cup hockey tournament on September 11–12, 2026. The action-packed event brought together eight teams competing in two highly competitive divisions, each battling for the title of division champion.
In the North Division, the St. George Old Lions claimed the championship trophy after traveling from St. George, Ontario. The competitive bracket also featured the Boston Whalers, Maineiacs HC, and the Portland Pilsners.
In the South Division, Early Morning Hockey Club Blue delivered an outstanding performance to secure the division championship. The hard-fought bracket also featured Early Morning Hockey Club Gold, The No Regretzkys, and The Hab Haters.
The tournament was a true community effort, organized and operated entirely by dedicated volunteers. Family Ice extends special thanks to Chip Wright for coordinating the referees, including Harry Sousa and Andrew McLaughlin, as well as to the scorekeepers and support staff who generously donated their time to make the event possible.
With the generous support of lead sponsor Atlantic Sportswear, the tournament was a tremendous success, raising more than $12,000. One hundred percent of the tournament’s proceeds benefit the Family Ice general maintenance fund. These vital funds help ensure that the community-based rink in Falmouth remains operational, safe, and accessible to players and families throughout the greater Portland area.

The Godfrey Wood Cup Hockey Tournament made its debut September 11–13, 2026 at the Family Ice Center in Falmouth, Maine—bringing together players, families, and fans for a meaningful weekend of hockey and community.
Created by Family Ice Center board member Jim Bonnvie, the tournament honors the life and legacy of Godfrey Wood, whose impact on the local community and hockey world continues to be deeply felt. Designed for players 55+, the event featured competitive North and South divisions, with teams matched by roster strength and guaranteed multiple games throughout the weekend.
More than just a tournament, the Godfrey Wood Cup is a celebration of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and community spirit. All proceeds from the event will directly support the Family Ice Center, helping to ensure its continued role as a hub for local athletics and connection.
About Godfrey Wood
Godfrey Wood was a goalie at Harvard where his stats rank among the top in NCAA Division I history for both lowest goals-against average and highest save percentage. His talent led him to the threshold of the 1964 Olympics and professional stints as a backup goaltender for the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings.
Godfrey was instrumental in helping start the Family Ice Center in Falmouth in 1997 where he served as its Board President from 2014 to 2025 and recently led the fundraising efforts to restore its outdoor rink, Twombly Pond.
Off the ice, Godfrey was a master at bringing people together. He didn’t just build teams; he built communities. He was a founding partner of the New England Whalers (now the Carolina Hurricanes) and owner of the Nashville Knights. In 1993, he moved to Maine to start the Portland Pirates, winning the Calder Cup and turning hockey games into beloved community events.
Whether he was fundraising to launch and operate a new hockey franchise or a new restaurant franchise, or leading a plan to found the nonprofit Family Ice Center, Godfrey had a unique gift for bringing people together to create joyful experiences for his community.
