Opportunity Skate: Family Ice Center Helps Others

2006 NE Sled Hockey Bruins
Family Ice Center is operated by Family Ice, a privately owned and operated 501-C3 non profit corporation. The facility receives no local, state or municipal funding and operates solely on revenues generated from ice rental sales, corporate sponsorship agreements and donations from the private sector and grant/foundation community.
Community Outreach Program
As a way of supporting our community, Family Ice created a skating based community outreach program called “Opportunity Skate”. Since the program’s inception in 1999, it now offers 250 hours of ice time annually to numerous school groups and private non-profit associations that support the physically and mentally challenged, youth at risk groups, senior citizen groups and various adult and youth based special education and life skills programs. Opportunity Skate – serving the community through skating “one stride and dollar at a time”.
The list of program participants is growing each year and the need for additional funding to support this growth is urgent. The Opportunity Skate program now regularly supports the weekly recreation activities of over 1,000 local citizens per year and with additional financial assistance we can create new programs and touch even more lives.
Local Foundations Support Opportunity Skate
In addition to numerous large and small scale private donations, the program has received grant support from the following foundations:
- The Dudley Foundation
- National Recreation Foundation
- Apple Lane Foundation
- The Daniel Cardillo Foundation
- The Ingalls Foundation
- The New York Community Trust
- The Forns Charitable Trust
- Maine Community Foundation
